Selling privately in Boise: the handover, the payment, and the scams that have been reported
A private sale is a stranger, a sum of money and a title, all in your driveway at once. The payment and documents deserve a check before the handover. The ones that do not go wrong at three moments: when the payment cannot be checked, when the buyer's name is not on the paper, and when the car leaves before the paperwork is done. This page takes those three, then lists what Boise and Idaho authorities have said about scams on people selling things online, dated and scoped to exactly what they said.

Payment you can verify before the keys move
Cash at a bank counter, or a cashier's check drawn on a bank whose branch you can walk into, is what you can check while the buyer waits. A check that "clears" on your app is not the same as a check that is good; the Idaho Attorney General's office said it plainly to KBOI in 2015, in a warning about Craigslist sellers that has not aged: "What happens is you cash that check and then you send the money on, or send the goods on and you end up 3 weeks later maybe a month later with the bank saying that's a counterfeit check and you're on the hook." That report was about general goods, not a car, and it is a decade old; the mechanism is unchanged.
Any buyer who wants to pay more than the price and have you send the difference somewhere, or who wants you to pay a shipper they chose, is describing the overpayment pattern. Stop there.

The buyer's name on every document
Idaho gives you a concrete reason to insist on the buyer's full name and address before the car leaves: your own filing needs them. Idaho Code 49-526 says the release-of-liability statement "shall include the motor vehicle identification number, vehicle description, name of seller, name and address of buyer or other transferee, date of sale, odometer reading, and sales price." A buyer who will not give an address for that form is a buyer whose sale you cannot record.
Fill in the buyer's name on the title and the bill of sale yourself, in front of them, and never hand over a title with the buyer's block blank; a blank assignment is the tool of the reseller who never titles the car, and the record stays yours until someone does. Then file the release within five days; the release page has the form and the online route.

The handover itself
Plates off before the buyer drives away: Idaho keeps them with you, and a car wearing your plate is your problem until the plate is back in your hand. Meet somewhere public in daylight if the buyer is a stranger; Boise Police's personal-safety page offers general online-sale advice and this page does not claim a designated exchange zone, because no current city page describes one. Keep every message: the police page's advice for online sales is to "Be sure to save information exchanged in the sale, including e-mails and records of any phone conversations."
Before allowing a test drive, confirm the proposed driver’s licence and ask your insurer how the policy applies. Do not assume a stranger is covered. The paperwork page covers what you sign at the end.
Scams reported in Boise and Idaho, dated and as stated
No 2023 to 2026 report of a scam against a Boise car seller was found in the searched sources: the Idaho Attorney General's consumer alerts, the city's police pages, the Idaho Statesman, KTVB, Idaho News, KIVI and BoiseDev. That is what was searched, not a claim that nothing has happened. What the authorities have published is general and worth having.
Boise Police, in a 2022 scam bulletin now held only in the Internet Archive: "Anywhere that you can sell something online, there are scammers lurking to steal your money or use you to launder money they've already stolen." The Idaho Transportation Department, in a bulletin about fake toll-fine text messages: "Idaho does not have toll roads, and ITD does not issue toll fines." That one reaches sellers after the sale, when a text about the car they no longer own arrives; the after-you-sell page repeats it. And one Boise report from February 2026, on a fake dealership website targeting buyers, could not be read past its publisher's wall, so it is named here and not quoted.

A private sale requires you to arrange the advertising, meetings and payment checks; it does not guarantee a higher net return. If you prefer a carrier collection, the pickup buyer this site refers to collects at your address and pays at the truck: "Payment is made on the spot at pickup in exchange for your signed title and keys." Should I take a cashier's check?
Only one you can verify with the issuing bank, in person or on a number you found yourself, before the keys move. The counterfeit ones look right for weeks. KBOI, AG warning, 2015.
Is there a police safe exchange zone in Boise?
No current City of Boise page describes one, so this site does not claim it. Meet in public, in daylight, and keep the messages. Boise Police: personal safety.
The buyer wants to pay by app and "cover the fee". Fine?
Verify the payment through your own bank or payment service, using contact details you found independently. Refuse a request to refund an overpayment or send money to a third party.
